Photospheres

Photospheres are spherical panoramas, novel circular photomontages that have been developed by Edward Hill.  They contain everything visible above, below and around you at a given point – a total perspective that places you at the centre between earth and space. Created from dozens of photographs, each of these total 360 degree perspectives gives a magical all-round view.  They are usually made in pairs of 2 photospheres at each carefully chosen location, a ‘down’ photosphere which gives you the sensation of being above a small world , and an ‘up’ photosphere’ that of being surrounded by space. The peculiar perspective allows you to be simultaneously aware of the ground, the sky and the surrounding landscape, coming to a new recognition of locations that you may know well.

The total portfolio can be accessed by visiting the website www.glartists.com , following the links for photospheres and searching either by index, by location or by subject.

Biography

Photographer Edward Hill has had a varied career. He trained at Venini Glass Factory in Venice, Italy during 1973-4, and spent the next 18 years designing and working with hot glass in his own studio in Greenwich, subsequently working with rock, glass and light installations and as a landscape photographer. From 1999 he developed a digital photographic method of creating photospheres, working with the new technology which made this possible for the first time. He has exhibited his work frequently since 2003 at Galleries and in Cathedrals throughout the UK.  He has been Artist in Residence for Greenwich Park in London, and has exhibited internationally at the Brain Project, Trieste, Italy in 2007, at the In Paradiso Gallery in Venice, Italy in 2008. In 2009 two of his prints were chosen by the Royal Photographic Society for the 152nd International Print Exhibition, and his portfolio of images of ‘Trees in Greenwich Park in winter’ is a finalist in the portfolio category of the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition 2009.

Trees
‘I have lived next to the beautiful tree-filled landscape of Greenwich Park for many years. My photospheres illustrate the way that trees, like people, stand rooted on and drawing nourishment from the earth, but are reaching out to and drawing vital force from the heavens.’
