Driftwood Print 2008Fiona’s practice is largely based in sculpture, whether making things anew or bringing existing items together in unexpected ways; in addition it encompasses prints of objects. The colours, textures and forms of these are integral to her approach to the work.

She uses a variety of found objects, often finding that there is something inherently beautiful in items that have been aged over time, either during the natural processes of decay or in the discolouration that happens as a result. The combination of natural and man-made materials also fascinates her.

Fiona is interested in the conversations that happen when textures come together. ‘If they could speak I wonder what they would say,? Perhaps a murmur of approval, maybe an acknowledgement of the actions I have taken.’

Recently she has been making baskets. They are not for any obvious functional purpose - although some could hold objects in them - but more an exploration of decorative effect. Some of them have a story to tell; the individual personalities of these baskets beg for an account of their lives, so as a result her role as artist has also expanded to that of story teller.
